US Student Visa

Opens the door to world-class educational institutions for international students, offering diverse programs and opportunities for academic and professional growth.

US Student Visa (F-1 and M-1 Visas)

A US Student Visa, categorized into F-1 for academic students and M-1 for vocational students, is issued to international students who are approved to engage in full-time study at an accredited US institution. It allows students to pursue their studies and participate in certain types of practical training related to their majors.

What the F-1 and M-1 Visas Provide

  • Study Authorization: Permits full-time study at an accredited institution in the US.
  • On-Campus Employment: Allows limited on-campus employment for F-1 students and, under certain conditions, for M-1 students.
  • Off-Campus Employment: F-1 students may be eligible for off-campus employment through Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT), subject to approval.
  • Duration of Stay: Duration is typically for the length of the academic program plus any authorized training period, with possibilities for extension.

Note: The F-1 and M-1 visas do not permit indefinite stay in the US. Students must maintain their full-time student status and comply with visa regulations.

Application Process for F-1 and M-1 Visas

Applicants must first be accepted by a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school. After acceptance, they must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, complete the DS-160 online application, and schedule and attend a visa interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate with the necessary documentation, including proof of financial support and ties to their home country.

Visa Fees and Processing Time

There is a non-refundable visa application fee plus the SEVIS I-901 fee. Processing times vary by location, applicant's nationality, and other factors. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible, keeping in mind the academic program's start date.

Validity and Extensions

F-1 and M-1 Visas are issued to coincide with the duration of the academic program plus any authorized practical training period, with additional time allowed for departure. Extensions can be granted under certain circumstances.

Important Considerations

Violating the terms of the visa, such as failing to maintain full-time student status or unauthorized employment, can result in deportation and a ban on re-entry. Changing from an F-1 or M-1 visa to another visa category requires approval from USCIS.
